News Title: The Carolina Forest Wildfires, Horry County Forest and Rescue and the amazing support from local heroes
Carolina Forest, located west of Myrtle Beach and east of Conway is a rapidly growing area with many new home options. Carolina Forest is located in Horry County.

The amazing response to the Carolina Forest wildfires is a prime example of how the area has grown and how the various entities are equipped to support the public.

Horry County Fire Rescue (HCFR) plays a pivotal role in managing wildfires within Horry County, South Carolina. Established in 1987, the HCFR Wildfire Unit is based at Station 27 (Allens) and is dedicated to enhancing safety and effectiveness in combating vegetation fires. This specialized team utilizes various equipment, including brush trucks, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) equipped with quick-attack pumps, a high-water/wildfire response vehicle with a wildfire skid unit, and a support vehicle. Additionally, they deploy a saw crew for fire and severe weather incidents and have Red Card-certified firefighters to assist with backfires.

In early March of 2025, HCFR faced a significant challenge with a wildfire in the Carolina Forest area near Myrtle Beach. The fire rapidly expanded, prompting mandatory evacuations for several neighborhoods. HCFR, in collaboration with regional and state crews, actively worked to contain the blaze. By March 3, the wildfire had grown to approximately 2,059 acres and was 30% contained. HCFR operated within five divisions, focusing on specific subdivisions and deploying task forces capable of responding to flare-ups. They utilized drones for aerial reconnaissance and reinforced break lines with portable sprinkler systems to saturate the ground.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission assisted by providing plows to strengthen containment lines and conducted water drops from airplanes. Two additional helicopter resources were also deployed for water-dropping operations. HCFR crews conducted both aerial reconnaissance with drones and on-site visual assessments to inform their response strategies.

To support HCFR, firefighters from various agencies, including those from York County, were dispatched to relieve local crews battling the Carolina Forest fires. This mutual aid underscores the collaborative efforts among fire departments across the state during significant wildfire events.

Throughout the incident, HCFR maintained clear communication with the public, providing updates on road closures, visibility issues due to heavy smoke, and the status of firefighting efforts. They also acknowledged and appreciated the community's support, including donations and words of encouragement.

Overall, HCFR's comprehensive approach to wildfire response, combined with inter-agency collaboration and community engagement, plays a crucial role in protecting lives and property in Horry County.

These people are the true heroes of the community.
