The U-Haul company uses a U-Haul Growth Index, which is a statistical tool that measures migration trends across the United States and Canada. The U-Haul Growth Index is based on the analysis of one-way U-Haul truck rentals, which is a good indicator to reflect where people are moving to and from.
Although the U-Haul Growth Index is skewed towards the DIY movers and is only representing the U-Haul user population, it does represent a fairly large sample size of well over 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box® moving container transactions that occur annually.
The trend of southern states netting larger numbers of one-way U-Haul® customers continued during 2024, with South Carolina topping the U-Haul Growth Index for the first time.
On January 2, 2025, U-Haul provided Growth State Data from its U-Haul Growth Index that showed South Carolina topping the list. Migration to the Southeast continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state.
Myrtle Beach is a major contributor to this South Carolina ranking as it is a very popular destination for relocation due to its appealing mix of coastal charm, affordability, and vibrant community life.
